The only church in the world without a roof is located on Mount Kakkavos where it got its name. It is highly atmospheric and offers a unique experience to its visitors.
In 1305, monks from Agios Efstratios took refuge to protect themselves from Turkish invasions.
The last monk, before leaving, entrusted the icon-painting to a family from the neighboring village of Kontia and asked that this Hagiography to be honored each second day after Greek-Orthodox Easter. The faithful honor the Hagiography of Panagia “Virgin Mary” in the chapel and a large number of pilgrims flock for the celebration.
