Lemnos played an important role in World War I, having been selected as a base for Allied troops.
The Allied Cemetery on the road from Moudros to Roussopouli rests hundreds of dead soldiers of the Gallipoli campaign, mostly 148 Australians and 76 New Zealanders, but also from other countries, buried in clusters depending on their nationality.
Every May, events are held in memory of the allies who fought then, while many travel from Australia and Canada to pay tribute.
